ARASCHNIA LEVANA
ARASCHNIA LEVANA
Araschnia levana, the Map Butterfly, is a European and temperate Asian species famous for dramatic seasonal dimorphism. Individuals emerging in spring are predominantly orange with black markings, while the summer generation is much darker, with black wings crossed by pale bands. These contrasting forms are produced by developmental responses to day length and temperature rather than by genetic differences between separate populations. The caterpillars feed mainly on stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). The underside of the wings carries a network of fine lines resembling a map, giving the butterfly its common name.
Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print showcases its intricate orange, black, and white wing patterning. A unique piece for nature lovers, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
