DANAUS PLEXIPPUS
DANAUS PLEXIPPUS
Danaus plexippus, the Monarch Butterfly, is famous for long-distance seasonal migration in North America. Its orange-and-black warning coloration is associated with chemical defenses acquired during the larval stage from milkweed plants, the caterpillars' principal hosts. Eastern North American populations can travel thousands of kilometres between breeding grounds in the United States and Canada and overwintering sites in central Mexico. Several generations participate in the annual cycle, while the autumn migratory generation can live far longer than summer adults. Monarch populations also occur beyond North America, including in parts of Central and South America and on islands across the Pacific and Atlantic.
Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print showcases its iconic orange wings patterned with black veins and white spots. A unique piece for nature lovers, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
