GRETA OTO

GRETA OTO

Greta oto, the Glasswing Butterfly, is native to humid forests of Central America and northern South America, where it is especially associated with shaded forest habitats. Its transparent wings are produced by a combination of sparse scaling and microscopic surface structures that reduce light reflection, allowing much of the wing membrane to remain optically clear. Adults feed on flower nectar, while males are also known to gather around particular plants involved in the production of chemical compounds used during courtship. The species' unusual transparency is one of the most distinctive examples of optical adaptation among butterflies.

Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print showcases its distinctive transparent wings and delicate form. A unique piece for nature lovers, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
