HELICONIUS CHARITONIA
HELICONIUS CHARITONIA
Heliconius charithonia, the Zebra Longwing, is a tropical and subtropical butterfly distributed from South America through Central America and into the southern United States. Its elongated black wings are crossed by pale yellow stripes, a warning pattern associated with chemical defenses. The larvae feed on passionflower vines (Passiflora), from which they obtain defensive compounds. Unusually among butterflies, adults supplement nectar feeding by collecting and digesting pollen, gaining amino acids that contribute to their relatively long adult lifespan. Groups may also roost communally at night, returning repeatedly to the same sheltered sites.
Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print showcases its slender black wings striped with pale yellow bands. A unique piece for nature lovers, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
