ORTHETRUM CANCELLATUM
ORTHETRUM CANCELLATUM
Orthetrum cancellatum, the Black-tailed Skimmer dragonfly, is a medium-large dragonfly widespread across Europe and parts of western and central Asia. It inhabits open lakes, ponds, gravel pits and slow waters with exposed banks or sparse vegetation. Mature males develop a blue pruinescent coating over much of the abdomen, ending in a contrasting dark terminal section, while females and immature males look different. Males frequently rest on bare ground or low perches and patrol territories close to the water.
Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print captures its yellow abdomen with a contrasting dark tail and its finely veined translucent wings in precise detail. A unique piece for nature enthusiasts, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
