PAPILIO MACHAON
PAPILIO MACHAON
Papilio machaon, the Old World Swallowtail, is one of the most widely distributed swallowtail butterflies, occurring across much of Europe and Asia and extending into parts of North America. Its yellow wings are crossed by bold black markings and end in characteristic tails, with blue and red accents near the hindwing margins. The caterpillars feed on plants in the carrot family, including species of Apiaceae, and possess an eversible defensive organ called an osmeterium. Adults frequent open landscapes, meadows and wetlands, where their strong flight and large size make them conspicuous.
Presented as a refined naturalist plate, this art print showcases its elegant yellow wings marked with black patterning and blue-red accents. A unique piece for nature lovers, collectors of scientific illustration, and interiors seeking elegance with meaning.
