Rose quartz is a pink variety of quartz, most commonly occurring as translucent massive material rather than as transparent well-formed crystals. Research indicates that the pink color in much rose quartz is associated with microscopic fibrous inclusions related to the mineral dumortierite rather than a simple dissolved trace element. With Mohs hardness 7, it retains the durability typical of quartz. Some specimens display asterism—a star-like optical effect—when cut as cabochons, produced by oriented microscopic inclusions that reflect light in specific directions.
